About Marco Island
Marco Island is a choice location for snowbirds. In nearby Naples alone, the population booms from 22,000 to 300,000 during the winter. Many Midwesterners high tail it out of there and flock to sunny Marco Island to enjoy its rich culture, plethora activities, and sunshine.
Marco Island is found just off southwest Florida and is connected by bridge to Naples. Its lengthy beach stretches down the western coast, and most of the Marco Island condo rentals are found in the south. It is the biggest of the Ten Thousand Islands and is steeped in history, starting with the Calusa people coming to the island around 500 A.D.
The Weather
Ready to get out of the cold? Marco Island has warm, dry winters and typically sees about 300 sunny days every year. You might see some rain during the cooler months, but there are still many days that will be 80 degrees and sunny in the winter.
Things to Do
Seeing wildlife in action is part and partial to a snowbird’s stay in Marco Island. Come from March to October and you might see sea turtles nesting and baby turtles making their way toward the water. During the winter, though, you might happen to find the adults tucked away in a cozy nest.
South Marco Beach is one of two public beaches on the island. It is the more tranquil one, making it perfect for swinging in a hammock, reading your favorite book. Of course, the waters are refreshing, and the sand is perfect for burying your feet. You can collect a lot of lovely shells here or even glimpse dolphins swimming by.
Love nature? Take a walk through Briggs Nature Center. All three miles of accessible trails are easy to walk along, and you can see creatures in their natural habitats. Rookery Bay is home to otters, bobcats, and bald eagles.
Want to see something truly unique and kind of chilling? Sail out to the dome houses in Cape Romano. They’re abandoned now but were once home to the family of an oil producer. They managed to survive Hurricane Wilma, but these structures are fragile and might not be stable for much longer.
