What is on Marco Island?

Marco Island is a blend of nature and people. The beach and sandbars provide opportunities to go shelling and observe wildlife. You might even see dolphins swimming by! The Ten Thousand Islands stretch from the island’s southern tip to the southernmost edge of mainland Florida. This area is federally protected and serves as a sanctuary for rare and endangered birds and animal species.

As you might expect, this tourist-loved town has plenty of accommodations. Hotels, motels, and other vacation rentals on Marco Island abound. There are somewhere around 16,000 year-round residents here, so this is a bustling island at all times of the year.

What Can I Expect There?

Expect to find a lot of sun, sand, and sea. The whole island is quiet and clean, which is what locals and visitors alike love about Marco Island. At any given time, you will find pelicans standing on a sand bar or ships sailing by.

Attractions

Attractions are everywhere! Marco Island Historical Museum is a ‘must’ for every visitor, as it teaches about how Marco Island came to be how it is today.

Cape Romano and its hauntingly beautiful abandoned dome houses make for a picturesque sight. Visitors have compared it to being in a Star Wars film or a postapocalyptic novel. You can jet ski or kayak on through and see the ruins close-up.

For swimming, hit up South Marco Beach. Hideaway Beach is also a charmingly romantic place to watch the sunset. Also, you can take a stroll down the boardwalk at Briggs Nature Center and see all types of wildlife up close.

Activities

You can do everything from jet ski tours, rent a catamaran, or go to the farmer’s market on Wednesdays (in November through mid-April). Go on a dolphin-watching tour, sail at sunset, or rent a bike and ride on a guided tour.  You can even rent an electric trike! Also, there are some great golf courses on the island.

Bringing your dog? Take them to Canine Cove! It is the island’s sole dog park, and it gives your pup plenty of space to run and play with other dogs.

Head off to one of the local piers for some fishing or charter a boat to take you out on the water. Marco Island’s waters are ripe with a variety of fish.

Shopping

While staying in your rentals on Marco Island, get some shopping in. Marco Island has a wide variety of shops to check out. Visitors and locals love Island Trends, which has a huge selection of swimwear and clothing for men and women.  Keep In Touch is also a favorite and is paired with the local United States Post Office.

Dining

Wondering where to eat? Fin Bistro is top-notch when it comes to seafood. Sit inside or dine outdoors and enjoy a creative seafood dish paired with a glass or two of wine. The scallops are a crowd-pleaser.

CJ’s on The Bay is the place to get food and drinks for a great value. Happy Hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. each day, and Thursday nights feature live music. You can tie your boat up and wander on in.

Why is it a Good Getaway for Floridians and Tourists Alike?

Marco Island is the perfect getaway for everyone looking to enjoy warm, sunny weather and sandy beaches. There is also something here for everyone. Kids can enjoy many of the same activities as adults.

There are a lot of local artists, crafters, and shop owners who vend unique wares. Take a new painting home or make your own crafts with the shells you find.
