While Marco Island typically has gorgeous weather, the island does get its fair share of rainy days. But you don’t have to sit inside your Marco Island vacation rentals and do nothing! As it turns out, there is plenty to do on a rainy day on Marco Island. There are quite a few fun and unique local museums that offer plenty of Marco Island indoor activities, all just minutes away from our rentals.
Marco Island Historical Museum
Marco Island Historical Museum is probably most famous for the Key Marco Cat. This discovery is one of the most spectacular finds in North American archaeology and gives us insight into the Calusa Indians who once populated Southwest Florida.
The museum is host to an array of both traveling and permanent exhibits dedicated to showing how Marco Island evolved into what it is today. This once-small fishing village became a huge tourist center after the development it experienced with Deltona Corporation in the 1960s. Still, visitors can take a step back in time and enjoy learning about subtropical Marco Island.
Museum of the Everglades
The Museum of the Everglades is a quick drive from Marco Island, located in Everglades City. This place used to be only accessible by boat, and the museum itself started off as a commercial laundry building.
The Museum’s building was constructed at a time when the Tamiami Trail was under development. The museum has a lot of traveling and permanent exhibits showing over 2,000 years of human history as they occurred in Southwest Florida.
The building itself has been restored to its 1920’s appearance and will transport you back almost a century with this design. It has some beautiful pale pink siding, so you can’t miss it!
Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples
You won’t be able to enjoy time spent in rentals with a pool on Marco Island if it is raining. That’s why gathering up the family and taking them to Golisano Children’s Museum makes for a great idea. This place offers fun Marco Island indoor activities for visitors of all ages!
This is one of the museums near Marco Island that stays busy year-round. There is an ABC Toddler Lot that gives toddlers a lot of things to do. Older children might enjoy the Adopt-a-Pet veterinary clinic and Build It! There is an Art Studio that lets kids unleash their artistry, and the Inventioneer’s Lab, which opened in the Fall of 2019, offers kids the opportunity to participate in skill-building projects that help them learn from the mistakes they make on previous attempts.
Those are far from being the only exhibits at the museum. There is the Loos Art Gallery (which emphasizes the depictions of animals and children in art), a reconstruction of The Everglades, a child-sized produce market, and the ever-popular Banyan Tree that lets kids crawl through different levels until they reach the very top.
There is also a huge museum store where you and your children or grandchildren can shop for awesome souvenirs. When you need to take a break, sit down at the C’mon Garden Café, which is host to a bounty of healthy dining options. There are a bunch of gluten-free options available too.
Of course, you can also choose to spend some quality time in your rental with your loved ones. Order dinner in, make a pillow fort, or enjoy movie or game night! Whatever you decide, our Marco Island rentals are your home away from home on your stay. Contact us today for more information!
