About Marco Island
Marco Island is a barrier island in Collier County, Florida. It is located near the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Southwest Florida. Marco Island is the largest barrier island within Southwest Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands area extending to the south to Cape Sable. The island is unbelievably scenic, and high elevations are relative to the generally flat South Florida landscape. Marco Island has distinct wet and dry seasons where most of the rainfall comes between June and October. If you’re considering Marco Island real estate, keep these factors in mind.
Marco Island’s history can be traced all the way back to 500 AD when the Calusa People inhabited the island. Their artifacts were discovered in 1896 by anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing, including the notable wooden Key Marco Cat, which is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution. Early development of the island began in the late 1800s after the arrival of William Thomas Collier and his family. Collier founded the village of Marco on the island in 1870. Early on, clam digging became a major industry on the island, and ferry service to the island began back in 1912, which operated between Marco Island and the Isles of Capri.

There are the Esplanade Shoppes, The Marco Walk Plaza, and the Shops of Marco which are all home to some great local shops, where you can pick up any essentials that you may need while visiting the island. A private gated community situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico, it’s home to the world’s largest concentration of native live oak trees in the world. With plenty of bunkers and water traps on the course, it is an excellent choice for all experienced golfers coming to Marco Island. Wanting to unwind at a park on Marco Island? The Frank E. Mackle Community Park features a playground, dog park, shuffleboard, and a wide variety of sports fields for you to play on.
